ABC News Study reveals Web 2.0 accessibility issues
The new breed of websites featuring multiple layers of text, data that update in real time and user generated content pose a serious problem to accessibility by disabled persons. It is estimated that over 80% of Internet sites are not accessibility compliant and would pose problems for users with screen readers or other non-standard browsers.
IBM are working on a system called iAccessible2 that addresses some common scenarios that prevent screen-reading software from accessing layers of text or user generated content. Some aspects of this system will be integrated into Mozilla Firefox and Lotus product suites.
