Microsoft To Acquire Mobicomp

July 3rd, 2008

Only last month Microsoft had announced that they were going to stop acquiring new companies. Now, however, they have decided to make an exception, and will acquire the Portugal-based company Mobicomp.

Mobicomp, which is about 8 years old, deals with storage, backup and restoration of mobile data online. The company has certain products, which are expected to be extremely useful to Microsoft immediately or in the near future, to improve their mobile online services.

Amongst Mobicomp’s products, MobileKeeper Backup & Restore will enable clients to maintain all their mobile data online, without the need to create any physical links and MobileKeeper Sharing and Communities will enable the creation, sharing and downloading of content, on mobiles, in order to build personal networks, and communities and will also make it possible for users to publish their data on blogs and social sites like Facebook, Flickr and Hi5, which are gaining in popularity everyday.

Financial details of the deal have not yet been revealed, but Todd Peters, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Mobile Communications, said, “Investing in the right solutions from companies like Mobicomp will extend the capabilities of Windows Mobile and Windows Live to help us provide the most innovative and seamless way to stay connected.”

The exact date for finalisation of the deal is yet to be announced.
