Twitter To Release Usernames

Twitter plans to release usernames from inactive accounts on their site. Interested users will then be able to register for these usernames once they’ve been released.

Twitter’s current policy classifies an account as inactive if it has not been updated or logged into in the last six months.

According to The Next Web, if this plan is put into action, all accounts that have been dormant for six months or more will automatically be considered inactive and their usernames will then be available to any other interested users. This could lead to a real rush to claim some catchy usernames for SEO purposes.

Users who wish to retain their Twitter accounts should make sure they update or log in to their accounts at least once in six months.

In the past, it was possible to access such inactive usernames by providing details of the inactive account to Twitter. Later, however, the service had been discontinued.

While a spokesperson from Twitter has admitted that Twitter is considering this move, no details regarding an exact date for this are available as yet.
