Microsoft Live Search Bans Sites For Link Spam
22 Nov 06: A SearchEngineWatch post brought to light recently that Microsoft is clamping down on link spam by banning sites that artificially inflate their inbound link numbers by link exchanges.
Link spam has long been battled by Google. The last drastic algorithm update, Jagger had dealt a blow to all websites that exchange links or participated in link farms in order to influence search engine rankings. This recent move by Microsoft Live Search seems to mirror the same philosophy.
The letter sent by Microsoft to the forum poster read:
Your site is acquiring links through posting to or exchanging links with sites unrelated to your site content. Techniques which attempt to acquire unrelated spam links in order to increase ranking are considered spam and your site has been excluded from our index as results. Please contact us once you've removed these links and we will reevaluate.

Needless to say, this is one more reason for all website owners to be more careful when building links and not just taking the easy way out. Well implemented, highly targeted, relevant link building will show better results in the long run than quick link building schemes that eventually end up getting a website banned.
