Hitwise released data yesterday on the leading social networking sites in the UK. The data is based on their sample of 8.43 million UK Internet users and measures the percentage of traffic to the leading social networking websites. The percentages represent the market share of visits among the websites.

The top ten social networking sites in the UK for the month of April 2007 were as follows:

  • MySpace 33.77%
  • Bebo 33.53%
  • Facebook 12.82%
  • Faceparty 4.00%
  • Piczo 3.36%
  • Friends Reunited UK 2.12%
  • Tagged 1.60%
  • hi5 1.47%
  • Windows Live Spaces 1.10%
  • Facebox 0.93%

While MySpace is ahead of Bebo in April, May figures suggest that Bebo will overtake MySpace to become the most popular social networking site in the UK. Facebook is the fastest climber on the list, with market share soaring as much as 9% since it opened its doors to accept all Internet users in September 2006.
