In these days of recession, all possible money saving measures are helpful. As the saying goes, ‘A penny saved is a penny earned’. It has been found that the popular micro-blogging site Twitter is helping small businesses to do just that.
A recent survey conducted by O2, reveals that increasingly small and medium sized businesses are turning to Twitter to save on marketing costs, while still being able to stay in touch with clients and suppliers and as a means to recruit new staff. Twitter is also being used to improve business profile and communicate with a large market for free. Some businesses are also using Twitter to monitor their rivals.
While over 700,000 businesses are using Twitter, 6,000 of them have been found to use Twitter daily, and an estimated 3 million tweets are being sent daily by them.
During the survey of 500 businesses having less than 20 staff members, it was found that about 17% are using Twitter and over a fourth of them have signed up in the last one month itself.
About 16% of those surveyed claimed to have saved about 5,000 pounds, while nearly one third of them claimed to have saved 1,000 pounds.
According to Simon Devonshire, head of small business marketing at O2, Twitter is a good example of how new technology is helping out in the time of recession.
It was found that Twitter was being used more than other sites like LinkedIn or Facebook and its popularity is expected to increase further.
